A community has raised nearly £3,000 in less than two days to help support the young family of motocross rider Tom Pattison who died on Sunday.

Mr Pattison, who wore number 183, was competing in the Eastern Centre Motocross Championship at Blaxhall Circuit on Sunday when he fell from his bike. He died at the scene.

A former Sir John Leman High School pupil, Mr Pattison lived in Beccles with his wife and young daughter.

On Monday night a fund was launched in his honour by friend and fellow motocross rider Leon Raby, 28, as a means to offer support to Mr Pattison’s family at this difficult time. Within 24 hours of it being set up it had raised in excess of £2,000.

A memorial ride has also been arranged at Blythburgh Motocross Track, Mr Pattison’s favourite track, on Sunday, organised by his close friend Shaun Southgate.

Mr Raby said: “I didn’t know Tom as well as others, but we were all part of the motocross family.

“In unfortunate circumstances like this tragedy it is heart warming to see so many people coming together.

“With Shaun dealing with the loss of his close friend and organising the memorial ride day I thought I would set up the Justgiving page for people to leave a little if they can to go towards Tom’s family.

“Everyone that lines up on the start gate of the motocross tracks knows the risks. Many have crashes and injuries which heal but the true risks and dangers never really sink in until a tragedy like Tom’s death happens.

“The support has been fantastic with so many kind messages left which I know Tom’s family are reading.

“It’s all for Tom’s family. Having recently married and had a child the circumstances have really hit home about the risks of our sport and about making the most of the time you have with your loved ones.”

Hundreds of memory stickers are being printed by Suffolk firm IRP Decals which will be sold in exchange for a small donation to the fund on Sunday.

Final plans for the memorial ride are still being confirmed, but the event is expected to include a minute’s silence, with tributes to be made at 1pm to mark a week since his death.

The event is going ahead with the support of Mr Pattison’s family.
