The Buttermarket shoplifter was given a community order after stealing the sunglasses worth almost £160.

Timothy Utedzi, of Medway Road, pleaded guilty to theft and going equipped for theft when he appeared before South East Magistrates’ Court.

The 39-year-old also admitted being in breach of a conditional discharge which he was given on September 8 last year for engaging in a barred activity.

Prosecutor Ian Allen said the shoplifting occurred shortly after 2pm on January 8.

Utedzi went into TK Maxx in the Buttermarket shopping centre in Ipswich and selected two pairs of Rayban sunglasses with a total value of £159.98.

He carried them over to the children’s wear department and got out some wire cutters which he them used to remove the security tags. Utedzi also took off the price tickets.

He then went to leave the store, but was detained.

Mr Allen said after Utedzi’s arrest he told police he had no particular intention when he went into the shop but decided to take the sunglasses.

Mr Allen said: “He expressed remorse saying his actions were irresponsible and also made reference to his parental responsibilities.”

After seeking a fast-track pre-sentence report from the probation service District Judge Sally Fudge gave Utedzi, formerly of Back Hamlet, a 12-month community order.

As part of the order he complete 40 hours’ unpaid work.

Utedzi was also told he must pay £85 costs and £60 to the victims’ fund.
