ONE lane of the A14 has now reopened following an incident involving bikes in the road which had fallen from a vehicle.
A spokeswoman for Suffolk Police said the westbound carriageway was affected just before the Orwell Bridge, right outside the Shell garage.
She said it seemed the bikes in the road had then caused damage to the lorry’s tyres.

I don't think so Jane. This particular incident seems to have occurred because bicycles had fallen from a vehicle. It may be the case that they were inadequately secured. However, as a service station is a point at which motorists join or leave a motorway, there may be greater scope for an accident simply because of the fact that vehicles are negotiating a junction.

Everything seems to happen outside the garage - do people have accidents because they are trying to see the price of fuel????

I thought Phillip Smart (IBC) said that these events don't happen very often.
