Travel: Tree removed from rail line between Colchester and Manningtree but commuters still face lengthy delays

Rail commuters are facing delays of up to an hour because an obstruction on the line between Colchester and Manningtree earlier this morning.

Engineers were sent to the scene to clear the obstruction, believed to be a tree, which Network Rail says has now been removed.

The incident also had an effect on trains travelling between Ipswich and London.

All lines have now re-opened but there are still delays.

  • Pity you don't let facts get in the way of your comments Ipswich ?? The line didn't get blocked until just after 8am and it's likely to be down to the wet weather. While the tree could have been there before the railway (more than 100 years) it's likely that it wasn't. Like most organic things trees grow and need to be managed if they are not to cause a problem. Simples!

  • The trees were probably there before the track! When you build a railway you clear enough land to build the track, you don't knock down the entire forest! Trees are normally fine until they suffer disease, then the real problems occur. You probably missed watching Lords cricket because some youths stuck a tree branch on the line...

  • I had planned to watch cricket at Lords today but abandoned my journey at 9:30 as there were no trains to London and even with an immediate resumption it would be unlikely the journey could have been completed by the start of play. While some causes of disruption may be unavoidable, trees near enough to the track to be able to block it or bring down wires is surely one risk which could easily be seen and avoided. Why wasn't it?

Should cyclists be allowed to go through red traffic lights when it is safe?

A cyclist rode through a red light and turned left while I was walking the dog this week. It was 6.20am, there was no other traffic so no risk but, officially, the cyclist had broken the law.
