An Ipswich pub which had been a stalwart on the east side of town has closed its doors for the last time on Saturday, as the owners announced they were shutting following their five year stint.

A Facebook post published by the Grand Old Duke of York’s management last week said: “I would like to announce that on behalf of myself, Rosie ,and the team the Duke of York will be closing down as from Saturday 8th July.

“It’s been an amazing five years in which we have built up wonderful friendships and memories and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their support and to say it’s been truly a pleasure to have served you all.

“With our very best wishes to you all, Debs, Rosie and the team.

It is not clear why the pub has closed or whether anyone had plans to take over the building, which also hosted dozens of bands for live music.

For many years the pub had been run by the Adnams brewer before it sold the pub on in August 2008.

An update on the Suffolk CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) website confirmed it had shut, but said: “We don’t currently know its future”.

The closure prompted an outpouring from well-wishers and supporters, who expressed their sadness at the news.

Charlie Charles on Facebook commented: “Shocking, nice place as well.”

Ipswich Star reader WillMondy added: “I’m going to miss the great cider selection and the Thursday night quiz. Only went a few times but had a great time.”

David Mackness commented on the pub’s Facebook post: “Lord, how we’ll miss you! I know we didn’t come very often but we truly admired the way you’ve built up such a great community pub.”

Guy Murray added: “Sorry to hear this, a great team who always made you feel like you were the best customer. I hope you’re successful in whatever you do next. Good luck!”

The pub is the latest in a string of bars and pubs to have closed in recent years.

Earlier this year The Brewery Tap closed while Pump and Grind in Great Colman Street closed just one week before Christmas. The Golden Lion on the Cornhill closed in March 2016. The Garland and The Dales pubs have also closed in the last two years.
