PEOPLE in the Trimley villages were reeling today after the first two of an expected stream of housing proposals became public.

Villagers have feared for years that their communities could be swamped by new homes and almost all the fields between the A14 and Ipswich-Felixstowe rail line lost.

Now the situation has become real with two projects being put forward – one in Trimley St Mary and the other in Trimley St Martin – and others expected to follow.

Developers have submitted a planning application for 66 houses on the site of the Mushroom Farm, while landowners have revealed proposals for up to 100 homes on land off The Josselyns.

People living in High Road and The Joselyns have voiced their opposition to the Thurmans Lane project – with worries about the loss of high-grade farmland, extra traffic, and the character of the area being ruined.

Parish councillors have been seeking a small number of homes in the village to provide for its future needs – especially affordable housing – and are against large-scale development and particularly the cumulative effect of projects.

Suffolk Coastal – which has to find land for at least 1,760 new properties in the Felixstowe area – has already identified a number of fields in the twin villages as having potential for development.

Parish councillor Richard Kerry, who is also chairman of Suffolk Coastal, said: “The council needs to show it has a five-year supply of land available for housing and at the moment we have a two-and-a-half year supply.

“Applications have been passed in recent weeks which would not normally have found favour. The problem when you look at the Felixstowe area is that we don’t have enough sites for 1,760 homes we have to provide, but the land must be found.”

At present the council has agreed 7,800 new homes across the district in the next 15 years, but this could rise to 11,000 – and a proportion of the extra 3,200 will also be built in the Felixstowe area.

  • 2nzy has said hit the nail on the head, and who else is better qualified to comment then a resident directly affected!!!. Most of Trimley was a field 40 years ago, its just common sense that as population of the country grows then so must the number of properties. Someone commented about the reducing amount of farmland v’s our ability to feed ourselves – we produce enough food in this country currently yet we choose to export it, and then bizarrely import other things that we also produce. Im sure the chicken nuggets of a well know fast food outlet really need to be imported from China!!! Anyways, gone off subject slightly… we don’t really have much of a choice as the growth numbers have been set, we just need to accept its going to happen and embrace the growth as best we can.

  • C Smith grow up,you're a hypocrite because your house is built on a field also.Btw,buying my house in the josselyns and living here for 30 years this isn't news, the josselyns was always meant to be bigger but never completed.bring it on,no residents are in uproar and they'd be hypocrites too if they did seeing as they're house is built on the same field.stop stirring things up evening star

  • what i can not understand with any of this ,if there is such a lack of affordable housing in the area and hoards of people clamoring to come and live here why are there lots of low cost houses still on the market. there are two near me in the 120-140 k mark been on the market for about nine months.go and look in any estate agents window and there are several even cheaper.as for tesco if you want trimley to become like any other suburban sprawl and a deserted town center then support it i certainly will not

  • Now perhaps the NIMBY's can see why Tesco want to develop a store? There are just the first, to help cater for the large swathes of new housing that the Area is compelled to build! Who can blame Tesco, they are a commercial company and just read the signs quicker. It's all going to happen, no whinging will stop all this....we have no choice anymore!

  • Why don't they just get on with it and concrete over the whole blasted Country and be done with it. Eventually with the loss of farmland and more people to feed will be screwed as the rest of the world uses their food to feed themselves. Welcome to Felixwich twinned with Tesco.
