Campaigners battling to save an historic railway building have celebrated an important milestone after signing a new tenancy agreement at the site.

The Trimley Station Community Trust welcomed about 70 of its supporters including the MP for Suffolk Coastal Therese Coffey to the lease signing event at the site yesterday.

Trustee and director Aaron Burrell said it was a “happy occasion” which marked a “very important milestone”.

The trust has been battling to save the building since Network Rail threatened to demolish it in around 2010.

Members hope to create an “innovative, technology focused” community facility at the site at an estimated cost of around £350,000.

Mr Burrell said that yesterday’s milestone opened up many new fundraising opportunities, which he hopes will see the project completed in time for the building’s 125th anniversary in 2016.

  • Hi cwayconslt, I'm one of those people in hi-viz. I agree, it does look rather odd, but there was a good reason. We had between 60 - 70 supporters there and when the Chairman gave a speech to thank everyone he said that if anyone would like a chat about the project they could identify the Trustees due to them wearing hi-viz. So it was purely to make ourselves identifiable in the crowd.

  • I greatly admire the enthusiasm and community spirit that has surrounded this endeavour. I cannot, however, understand why most of the supporters are wearing high-viz jackets !!
