UK: Controversial rail union boss Bob Crow dies suddenly

10:27 11 March 2014

Bob Crow

Bob Crow

Controversial rail union boss Bob Crow has died suddenly.

Mr Crow was general secretary of the Rail, Maritime, and Transport (RMT) union, and had been at the forefront of disputes with rail companies and London Transport over recent years.

Only last month he was involved in a live on-air spat with London Mayor Boris Johnson over a Tube strike which caused major problems for commuters and other travellers to London.

A brief statement from his union said: “It is with the deepest regret that RMT has to confirm that our general secretary Bob Crow sadly passed away in the early hours of this morning.

“RMT would request that all media respect the privacy of the friends and family of Bob Crow at this distressing time.”

  • I am not a member of the RMT, but I met Bob Crow several times. He was always at the annual Burston Strike School rally in early September, helping to man his union's stall, and carrying one end of their banner during the march round the village. He seldom spoke from the platform, preferring to spend his day chatting with the public. A gentle and unassuming ordinary man, not at all the ogre he was portrayed as on TV and in the rabid right-wing press. R.I.P. Bob Crow, yours will be a hard act to follow.

  • So what exactly is "controversial" about a trade union general secretary doing his best to protect his members' jobs and rights at work?
