Two appliances arrived on scene shortly after 2.30am to find a barn alight on Kentish Farm.

They reported 50% of the barn was alight and that it contained wood flooring materials. It was later confirmed some cylinders were also involved.

It was also very close to a poultry shed housing several thousand French partridges.

Two additional crews and a water bowser were requested as firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one jet and two hose reels to bring flames under control.

At about 3.30am the fire had been surrounded but the barn had collapsed. At this stage four jets were in use.

Crews were still on site this morning damping down the fire, with additional crews sent to relieve those who had worked through the night.

The cause of the fire is unknown and so both Essex fire service and the police will carry out an investigation.

Sub officer Darren Hockley from Wethersfield fire station said: “The good news is that no French partridges were hurt as a result of this fire.

“There were three sheds on the farm and thankfully the one housing the birds was not affected by the fire.

“The storage shed on fire contained wooden flooring and two large propane cylinders.

“Close by there were thousands of partridges in a second shed and the crews worked extremely hard to prevent the fire from spreading to the poultry shed.

“If the fire had reached the partridge’s shed I have no doubt they would have all died, the crews done an excellent job containing the fire to save the birds.

“The third shed contained furniture and was unaffected by the fire.”
