A controlled explosion was carried out at a construction site in Ipswich this afternoon after a grenade was dug up.
A Suffolk police spokesman said the Ministry of Defence’s bomb disposal squad from Colchester carried out the explosion at the site in Purdis Farm Lane at about 4.45pm.
The “pineapple-shaped” grenade was discovered by a digger driver just before 2.10pm, prompting the site to be evacuated and a 200m cordon set up.
A spokesman for Taylor Wimpey said: “We can confirm that a Second World War grenade was found at our Purdis Grange development earlier today. The police were immediately informed and the bomb disposal unit has subsequently disposed of the grenade safely.”
