An elderly man has become the second person to die following a crash on the Norfolk and Suffolk border.

After a woman in her 70s died yesterday, police have confirmed that the man who was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the crash has also died.

Police investigations are continuing into the collision on the A143 at Ellingham, near Bungay.

Emergency services were called to the crash, involving three cars – a Vauxhall Meriva, a Renault Scenic and a Ford Focus – about 1.45pm yesterday (Friday, May 9).

A woman in her 70s, who had been a passenger in the Meriva, was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge by the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, but she later died of her injuries.

A man in his 80s, who was driving the Meriva was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with life-threatening injuries by the East Anglian Air Ambulance. A police spokesman said this afternoon: “We can confirm that he has sadly died as a result of his injuries.”

A second man, who had been driving the Renault Scenic, was taken to N&N with minor injuries while a female passenger in this vehicle was uninjured.

The female driver of the Focus suffered a suspected broken arm and was taken to the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston for treatment. She was alone in the vehicle.

The collision took place close to Ellingham and the road remained closed until about 6pm.

Firefighters from Loddon, Bungay, Beccles, Carrow and Harleston went to the scene and used special equipment to free the casualties.

The police spokesman added: “Inquiries to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing. Officers would like to hear from anyone who believes they may have seen any of the vehicles prior to the collision or witnessed the incident itself.”

Information should be directed to the Serious Collision Investigation Team (SCIT) on 101.
