The accident, which has closed the A11 in both directions between Barton Mills and Red Lodge, was reported to emergency services just after 2pm.

The male driver, who was trapped in his vehicle, was treated at the scene by paramedics and doctors, including from the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service and an air ambulance. He was later cut free by fire crews.

The man, who is believed to be in his 30s, suffered serious trauma injuries and was taken by land ambulance to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

The A11 was partially closed and the Highways Agency has put diversions in place. The south-bound carriageway was reopened after debris was removed with the north-bound carriageway closed for a longer period. The vehicles have now been recovered and leaked fuel removed from the road, north-bound.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and take alternative routes.

The crash mainly involved two lorries, with a third suffering minor damage.

Anyone who witnessed this collision is asked to contact Suffolk police on 101 quoting CAD 264 of 4/7/14.
