Six crews attended the incident at The Street, Little Thurlow, as fire ripped through the property, causing extensive damage.

The road outside the house between Bury Road and Temple End was closed this morning with fire crews dealing with the aftermath – and council building inspectors have been called in as the property has now become unstable

Crews were called at 3.31am with the first two on-call crews from Haverhill arriving at 3.49am.

They quickly assessed the situation and called for two extra fire engines and an aerial appliance.

An on-call crew from Wickhambrook, an on-call crew from Linton, Cambs, along with specialist equipment from Cambridge was sent to the scene.

The blaze had broken out on the second floor of the property and four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels tackled the flames. They also used thermal imaging cameras to check no-one was inside.

By 4.18am good progress was being made to deal with the incident, but an hour later there were signs that the fire was breaking through the roof void.

Crews used a further thermal imaging camera and firefighters climbed a 13.5m ladder to attack the flames from the outside of the building.

Two further crews were called – an on-call crew from Clare which had been on standby at Haverhill fire station, and full-time crew from Bury St Edmunds.

Crews are likely to be detained at the scene for some considerable time, removing roof tiles from the property and damping down hotspots onthe second floor and in the roof void.

Equipped with a hose reel and small tools, crews are also salvaging items from the ground floor.

The cause of the fire and full extent of the damage is not known at this time.

Crews have now left the scene to return to their stations.

It would take a phenomenal effort to produce a bad Dirty Dancing show. The 1987 coming-of-age drama is ripe for any interpretation: iconic music, a timeless script, a clear story with emotional depth, relatable characters and well-defined goals, and of course, some pretty captivating dancing.
