Police, paramedics and firefighters were called to reports of the single-vehicle collision on the junction of Bridge Street and The Thoroughfare at around 3.10pm.

The single occupant of the car, a man who was in his late 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene, a Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said.

It was earlier reported the man was trapped in a blue Volvo after the vehicle collided with Valerie’s, a women’s clothing shop, near the World Land Trust Gallery.

Emergency crews are still on scene. The Thoroughfare has been closed to traffic.

A structural engineer is assessing the building.

The East of England Ambulance Service sent a rapid response car, a paramedic officer and an ambulance to the scene.

An ambulance spokesman said: “The man died at the scene, there was not much we could do, unfortunately. He was trapped and he could not be removed from the car quickly enough for us to be able to save him.”

Police and fire crews left the scene of the crash at about 7.40pm. A police spokesman said road diversions are in place until engineers declare the building safe.

  • A tragedy no doubt and condolences to the family. Let this be a wake up call to all those with parents or grandparents approaching a similar age who really shouldn't be on the road. Not only for their safety but the safety of those around them. Seeing as the government won't put compulsory 'fit to drive' tests in place for the elderly, it seems it's up to us to dissuade them from getting behind the wheel.

  • I knew the man in question. He was a lovely guy and as fit, healthy and agile as a person half his age, both physically and mentally. Please don't judge his driving abilities and make assumptions just because he was 'in his late 80's'.

  • I don't doubt you for a second. Do you know the cause of the accident then?
