Trains running through this station may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes at short notice.

Greater Anglia said work was being done to resume normal services as quickly as possible.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: “BTP officers were called to the line close to Witham railway station, Essex, after a report that a man had been struck by a train.

“Officers from BTP and Essex Police attended the incident, which was first reported to BTP at 10.40am.

“Crews from East of England Ambulance Service also attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is currently being treated as non-suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

“Formal identification has not yet taken place.”

“The line was handed back to Network Rail at 11.49am.”

Travellers are advised train services to and from Colchester, Clacton-on-Sea, Ipswich and Norwich will be subject to delay, short notice alteration and cancellation.

Anita Curtis, who was travelling from Ipswich to London, was caught out by the delays this morning, but realising the seriousness of the situation, she said: “I think us seasoned travellers know it’s going to be two hours before the line is clear.”

However, she said others who are less frequent travellers were under the impression replacement buses would arrive to allow them to continue their journeys.

Ms Curtis added: “I was delayed getting to London but I was impressed with Virgin Railways though who did not make me pay any extra even though I missed my train booked as advanced ticket.”

Abellio Greater Anglia tickets are being accepted on First Capital Connect Customers to travel from London Kings Cross for a train service towards Cambridge.

Abellio Greater Anglia ticket holders may use First Essex buses for local travel in the Colchester area.

Advance Purchase Ticket holders may travel up to 60 minutes earlier/later than their booked train (Intercity services).

Customers are advised a rail replacement bus service is operating between Stansted Airport and Colchester.

Greater Anglia is making arrangements for rail replacement buses to operate between Witham and Braintree.
