A woman who died after she was reported to have fallen from the Orwell Bridge yesterday was from south-east Essex.

The deceased’s name will not be released until her inquest is opened, however police have said she was in her late 40s.

Although no more details have been given out at this time, it is understood the woman left her car nearby before falling from the bridge.

Her body was found by police after officers and coastguards checked the area below.

The tragedy occurred at around 1pm.

It was the third time this month police have been called to the bridge over fears for someone’s safety.

On January 2 officers found a bike belonging to Gavin Francis, of Purdis Farm, Kesgrave.

His family, friends and police have been very concerned for his welfare since he went missing at around 5.45pm on December 31 after going for a bike ride.

During the intervening period Suffolk Lowland Search and Rescue, the coastguard and Suffolk police, including the force helicopter, have made searches the river, the shoreline and the area around the bridge.

Officers have said they are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen him in the area of the bridge on the evening of December 31.

Mr Francis is white, 6ft tall, of average build, with dark brown receding hair, blue eyes and is clean shaven. He was last seen wearing a navy blue lycra cycling top with a white stripe down the side and navy blue lycra cycling shorts.

On January 7, another man was talked down by specially-trained officers following four hours of negotiation after he threatened to jump from the bridge.

Police were called to the incident which began just after 7.20pm and ended at around 11.40pm.

The man was taken into medical care at a hospital nearby.

The A14 Felixstowe-bound carriageway was closed for several hours during the stand-off.
