Train services between Ipswich and Stowmarket have steadily returned to normal this evening after overhead cables were damaged by a fire.
Trains between Ipswich and Stowmarket were suspended and rail replacement services arranged to escort passengers.
The blaze at Bolton Brothers recycling and waste management depot in Gipping Road happened at 5.15am today and affected overhead power lines which led to delayed and cancelled train services and also resulted in a level-crossing failure.
Commuters travelling between Norwich and London were diverted via Cambridge.
Watch commander Mark Cragg said earlier: “There was a fire in the recycling site which has affected the mainline from Norwich to London. It has affected the overhead equipment and as a result the line has stopped and the power has been knocked off. It is likely to be off for some time.
“We are going to be looking at CCTV later to determine what happened.”
Mr Cragg could not say whether the fire is being treated as suspicious at this stage.
Reuben Bolton, commercial director of the company, said: “I came down the road and the flames were well above the warehouse so it had taken hold by the time I got there.
“We had to stay well away from it (the fire) but you could certainly feel it.”
