Video: More rain on the way after windy weekend in Essex and Suffolk

There are few signs of the weather calming down in the near future after a blustery weekend left pars of the area flooded.

Much of Friday’s flooding subsided over the weekend, although major rivers including the Stour and the Little Ouse saw water levels rise during Saturday as water ran off the land.

The Environment Agency issued Flood Warnings for some stretches of these rivers, although they were downgraded yesterday as levels began to fall.

However there is more rain expected tomorrow, and as it will be falling on saturated ground that could lead to further problems.

Phil Garner from Norwich-based forecasters Weatherquest said: “There have been a few showers over the weekend, but not much rain, and the that’s what we expect on Monday as well.

“There is likely to be some heavier rain on Tuesday, from late morning until early afternoon, It could be quite heavy for a time, but it’s what you’d call ‘normal winter rain.’

“It’s not the kind of rain we’d normally get very concerned about but given that the ground is so saturated, there is obviously the potential for more problems.”

There is no real sign of a change in the weather pattern – with the jetstream apparently set to continue to bring in wet and windy weather for some time.

Mr Garner said: “This is normally the pattern you expect to see in March or April. It does mean we aren’t getting the cold weather you’d normally expect at this time of the year.”

Areas near the Stour did see some flooding on Saturday, but there were no reports of properties being affected – however footpaths and meadows were flooded.

There was a flood warning issued for part of the River Colne near Halstead, but again there were no reports of serious damage to properties.

A police spokeswoman said minor roads in parts of Essex continued to be flooded, although by Saturday evening water levels had started to fall and all major routes were clear.
