Torrential downpours have flooded roads in Suffolk - and forecasters are warning of more heavy rain to come.

Stowmarket and Needham Market were reported to be the worst affected by this afternoon’s wet weather after a slow moving band of rain hovered overhead for around an hour.

Weatherquest forecaster Dan Holley said warm, humid air from the continent had met a cold front causing persistent rain in west Suffolk and Essex for much of today with pockets of isolated downpours breaking out further east as well.

“There’s hardly any wind in the upper atmosphere so the showers can sit there for an hour or more leading to very heavy or even torrential rain,” he said.

“Throughout the evening we are going to see more of these showers develop across the county before the front eventually moves off.

“The band of weather that has been plaguing the region over recent days should disappear tomorrow.”

Looking ahead to the weekend, Mr Holley said the outlook was for warm, humid weather, with a better chance of sunshine than recent days but also possible thunderstorms.
