Are we eating enough fruit and veg?

One in five Brits think chips count as one of their five a day. Do you eat enough fruit and veg?

Charlie Ratcliffe, Spring Road, Ipswich

“I’m not really surprised that the study found that 70% of people fail to meet the recommended intake of fruit and veg. I haven’t had much fruit lately because I don’t really like it that much. I bought an orange earlier but that was just to drink the juice!”

Thomas Tyson, Park Road, Ipswich

“Seven out of 10 people not eating their fruit and veg sounds about right to me. I try to eat as much as I can but I don’t eat as much as I used to. Everything is expensive these days but especially fruit. If shops made it cheaper people would buy more fruit and veg.”

Mark Erith, Stowmarket

“I have strawberry jam quite often – does that count? Joking aside I believe the stats because prices are an issue for a lot of people. I find that, although it looks nice in the supermarket, when you get the fruit home it doesn’t taste as nice as it looks. Strawberries are pumped with water and others have food dyes.”

Ben Blagg, Felixstowe

“I think the stats could be misleading because I know a lot of people who eat three or four a day but it’s true not a lot have their five-a-day. There are hardly any fruit n veg shops in Ipswich or Felixstowe. If there were more that would obviously help because it would be more readily available.”

James Massingham, Diss

“I’m not surprised by the findings because I’m like a lot of people – I don’t like fruit or veg! But I’m trying to eat more because of the health benefits and I’m trying to encourage my friends to do the same. People who count chips as veg are delinquents really. There is no nutritional value.”

Michael Mok, Ipswich

“People, like myself, mainly eat junk food. I’ve just been down to Greggs for lunch rather than eating apples or bananas because I prefer it. But it is a health issue and I’m glad the issue is being raised. I come from Bolton originally and it’s a problem all over the country.”

  • I have around 15 - 20 a day - smoked all my life and have far less time off work than all the non-smokers I work with. Hate veg too - anything green should be left well alone to grow somewhere quietly.
