Ipswich Borough Council has suspended bin collections after it was deemed too dangerous for crews to continue in current weather conditions.

All refuse crews left the depot early this morning and collected hundreds of bins, but just before noon, a spokesman for the council said: “We’ve had to call the crews back in – it is too dangerous both for them and for the public to continue.

“We shall review the situation tomorrow but we will not be able to collect any more bins today. Some of the conditions in residential areas are treacherous.

“We have done our best and we ask residents to be patient as safety must come first. Please leave your bins and any bagged up black bin waste out, and we will pick them up as soon as it is safe to do so.”

Parks and cemeteries are open and staff have gritted parts of the town centre but people are urged to take care if venturing outside.

“It’s very icy and everyone should take extra care. Journeys by car should be made only if it is absolutely essential,” added the spokesman.
