Weather: Hurricane Bertha to miss Suffolk and Essex - but expect some wet weather this weekend

23:09 08 August 2014

Showers likely to continue

There is no need to worry – hurricane Bertha will miss the region.

There were worries Suffolk and Essex could be hit by the storm that has made its way across the Atlantic ocean.

Jim Bacon, from East Anglian-based Weatherquest, said it was unlikely the tail-end of the hurricane would affect the region, with just showers affecting the east of the country on Sunday.

He said: “This has long since been a threat, we’re not even naming it on the charts.

“It’s a load coming across the Atlantic with warm moist air.

“We’re just treating it like an area of low pressure with very warm moist air.

“Then there’s where the track takes it. At the moment the track will take the heaviest rain to the north and west of us and in the east we’ll get a period of rain. It will be humid and quite breezy.

“However it’s going to make a mess of one day of a summer weekend.”

Following the storm the weather is meant to get better.

“The humidity going to be a bit lower after this has gone through, but more pleasant.

“Some days there could be showers, some days there won’t.

“The rain could be quite heavy and will give some surface water as it won’t be able to drain away.

“It’s looking brighter with showers. Next week wouldn’t be without rain.”

  • I wish the weather people were paid on accuracy - (performance related pay) as this week they would now be able to afford a plate of fish and chips!!

  • Another mega pessimistic forecast for today .... Supposed to hammer down but haven't seen a drop .... Wonder how much you have cost the tourism industry today ?
