Archant

Suffolk’s iconic horse is continuing its revival with the arrival of a new foal.

Withersfield Brigadier became the fourth Suffolk Punch foal to be born this year when he became the latest arrival at the Rede Hall Farm Park, near Bury St Edmunds.

Mother Withersfield Ruby gave birth almost two weeks ago and was sired by Euston Malachite.

Farmer Nigel Oakley bought his first Punch in 1984, having been fascinated by the horses during his upbringing in Hollesley, with wife Chris calling the young Withersfield Brigadier “a lovely horse”, adding: “Hopefully he’ll grow big and strong.”

Numbers of Suffolk’s beloved heavy horse breed have gone from a handful to hundreds in the last 50 years, having been under serious threat in the 1960s.
