One of the A14 average speed cameras near the Orwell Bridge has not been replaced 50 days after being knocked down in a road collision.

The camera on the westbound carriageway between the Nacton junction (junction 57) and the bridge was knocked over in a single-vehicle collision involving an Audi on December 20.

The average speed camera has still not been replaced 50 days later. It is one of three average speed cameras in the 60mph zone, introduced in July 2016.

A total of 3,818 speeding offences were recorded in both carriageways in the 60mph zone in 2017 – an average of 10 a day.

Police have stepped up patrols to help enforce the speed limit.

A Highways England spokesman confirmed it is their intention to install a new camera by the end of the month.

When asked if the length of the delay is standard practice, the spokesman said issues such as equipment and contractors can lead to such delays.

Suffolk’s police and crime commissioner, Tim Passmore, said: “As a regular user of the bridge I could see that one of the cameras was lying on the side of the road so I asked the head of roads policing to speak to his contact at Highways England to get the camera reinstated as soon as possible. I also spoke to Highway England’s asset development manager earlier in the week and he has assured me that the work will be carried out as soon as possible.

“The important message here is that even without the camera on the westbound side of the bridge the speed limit remains in force. Officers regularly patrol this section of the road and anyone caught exceeding that limit will be prosecuted.

“I campaigned to get this 60mph limit on the bridge and believe it has made a difference. Any issue on the bridge causes havoc in Ipswich and surrounding villages so I ask all drivers to drive safely.”

A Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said: “Average speed cameras on the eastbound carriageway of the A14 near to the Orwell Bridge are unaffected and are working normally.

“Highways England are aware of the situation and are working to get a replacement camera installed.

“The speed limit of 60mph remains in force and officers regularly patrol this section of the road and will issue tickets to drivers exceeding the speed limit.”
