A woman airlifted to hospital after a fatal crash on the edge of Ipswich at the weekend is in a stable condition, police have said.

A man in his 70s died after the VW Golf he was driving was involved in a collision with a Rover 75 at the Whitehouse junction off the A14 near Asda just after 9.30am on Saturday.

The female driver of the Rover had to be freed from her car by firefighters and was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge with serious injuries by the Essex Air Ambulance.

A spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary has today said the woman is now in a stable condition at the hospital.

A woman who was a passenger in the VW was also taken to Ipswich Hospital with chest pains.

The A14 exit slip roads at the A1156 junction were closed on Saturday, along with the A1156 Bury Road itself. The roads reopened at around 3pm after the vehicles had been recovered.

Witnesses to the collision are asked to call police on 101, quoting CAD number 113 of Saturday.

Reporter Ed Crosthwaite was one of the first on the scene following the crash and was part of the effort to help. You can read his first hand account, here.
