Woodbridge: Council finally gets to bottom of sinkhole mystery

A phantom fence builder who cordoned off a large sinkhole but failed to report it to the authorities, has unwittingly prolonged its repair by weeks.
The hole, which has been growing at the top of Sandy Lane in Woodbridge since early June, was mistakenly assumed to have been scheduled for repairs after the fencing went up several weeks ago.
However, neither Suffolk County Council nor any utility company carried out the work, although each assumed the other had the matter in hand.
Caroline Page, who is Woodbridge’s county councillor, said it was “the most extraordinary state of affairs”.
“When I saw the hole I was aghast – because it’s waist deep on a fully grown man and someone could seriously hurt themselves,” she said.
“Whoever has put the fencing up has probably saved someone from suffering a nasty fall, but it would have been nice if they alerted us to it as well.”
The hole will be repaired on Tuesday.
