AARON Mclean says he jumped at the chance to join Ipswich Town on loan from Hull – and he admits he would ‘definitely be interested’ in signing on a permanent basis in the summer.

Released by Chelsea as a youngster, the striker was let go by non-league clubs Grays Athletic and Aldershot as a youngster before getting his big break at Peterborough United.

The 28-year-old’s career has stalled somewhat at Hull City in recent years, but the determined Londoner has been left newly-enthused following his switch to Portman Road.

“There were a few clubs interested when I became available, but the chance to work with Mick McCarthy and the chance to come back down south at such a massive club like Ipswich was a big draw,” he said.

“I’m told Mick was interested in me when he was at Wolves, but Peterborough didn’t want to sell at the time. Even at that time, Mick McCarthy was a manager I was desperate to work with.”

He continued: “First and foremost I need to come here and do well for Ipswich and do well for myself – that’s my main aim.

“Past that, Ipswich is definitely a club that I would like to join. It’s a massive club, I was excited to come here, so there’s no reason – if things go well – that I can’t stay.

“I don’t know what Steve Bruce (Hull manager) is thinking. All season he’s said I was in his plans, I’ve been in squads, but I haven’t been starting much and that’s what I need to be doing. Regardless of how much money you earn and whatever success you’ve had, every footballer wants to be playing.

“I’ve still got another year after this one (at Hull). We’ll have to see what happens in the summer. Much could depend on what their situation is – whether they are promoted to the Premier League or are still in the Championship.”
