Ipswich Town defender Adam Webster insists belief is still high in the camp.

The Blues won their opening five games in all competitions at the start of the 2017/18 campaign, but last Sunday’s 1-0 loss to rivals Norwich City made it seven defeats in nine heading into tomorrow afternoon’s Chammpionship match at struggling Burton Albion.

“We were gutted with last weekend’s result, but we thought we definitely deserved more,” said Webster. “We had some good chances and played well. We just switched off for a moment and they capitalised on it.

• Keep calm and carry on is McCarthy’s message

“The derby is a massive game for the fans and the club. It was a packed Portman Road so it was a good atmosphere and that’s why we’re disappointed. But we’ve got to put that behind us now and look forward. You can’t dwell on it for too long.”

The 22-year-old continued: “On our day we feel we can beat anyone. It’s just been fine margins in these games against the teams in and around the top. Our recent run hasn’t been good – we know that – but we have a big week coming up and we need to put it right.

“The boys we have up top are such a threat and I’m glad we have them in our team. I think they are up there with the best in the league.

“This is a big game for us now and spirits are still quite high. We’re creating chances, which is the main thing. If we weren’t creating chances then I think we’d be a bit more worried.

“Obviously, we can play better but the performances haven’t been bad and we’ve just got to go to Burton on Saturday and try and play well again.”

Webster made an impressive start to life at Town following his step up from League Two club Portsmouth, but a recurring ankle injury has sidelined him for the majority of 2017.

With two-and-a-half senior games under his belt since the latest comeback, he said: “It has been a frustrating year.

“Having been out for so long it feels like I’m starting again. I had three games for the Under-23s, but playing in the Championship again was another thing completely.

“I’m only going to get fitter with each game. And I know I’ve got to fight to keep my place in the team.”
