IPSWICH Town’s Portman Road ground could play its part in Anthony Ogogo’s ascent to boxing greatness, following the middleweight’s unveiling as the new ‘Golden Boy’ of British boxing, yesterday.

The 24-year-old Lowestoft middleweight has signed a deal with Oscar De La Hoya’s ‘Golden Boy Promotions’ in a move designed to transform the Olympic bronze medallist into a “crossover superstar”.

Ogogo, who had the option of remaining in the amateur ranks – with the target of making the 2016 Olympics – held talks with several of boxing’s big-hitting promoters, such as Frank Warren, Ricky Hatton and Matchroom Sports.

But after sensing “a spark straight away” on meeting with Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, Ogogo laid out his ambitious plans for world dominance, which included becoming a Knight of the Realm, but also stressed a desire to maintain his East Anglian roots too.

“Richard told me that when he wants something, he usually gets it,” said Ogogo, who will box eight times a year, four times in the UK and on four occasions in the US.

“I want to leave my career in his hands. If, in a couple of years I want to pack out Carrow Road, or Portman Road, he is the man that is going to do it and the reason why I have joined Golden Boy.

“I want to become a global superstar, Britain’s best-ever middleweight, better than Randolph Turpin, better than Alan Minter, better than Nigel Benn. I want to become Sir Anthony Ogogo. When the guys from the Olympics were awarded their MBEs I was gutted to miss out.”
