The Manchester United striker was criticised for his performances during Bulgaria’s failed World Cup qualifying campaign and wants to concentrate on his club career.

“I came to the decision that as of now I have retired from the national team,” said Berbatov, who netted a record 48 goals in 74 appearances for his national side. “It wasn’t a decision I took lightly and I have reconsidered several times.

“Everything has a beginning and an end and that is today.”
