Jewell, who has been in charge at Portman Road since January 2011, finalised matters with Club owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg this morning and all parties agreed that he should leave his post as manager.

In a statement, Jewell said: “I could not have had any more support than I have done from Marcus Evans and Simon Clegg I have enjoyed working with both of them in my time as Ipswich Town manager.

“We all know that football is a results business though and I’ve never hidden from the fact that our results have not been good enough.

“It’s been a privilege to be manager of such a fantastic football club and I want to thank the staff and the supporters for the backing they have given me in my time at the Club and wish Ipswich Town the best of fortunes ahead.”

Evans said: “Since he first walked through the door here, no one has worked harder to bring success to this football club than Paul Jewell.

“Unfortunately his outstanding commitment has not been rewarded by results on the pitch and having spoken with Paul at length, we feel it’s best for him and the Club if we go our separate ways.

“I’m bitterly disappointed – as is Paul – that it has not worked out as we had hoped when he became our manager 21 months ago and I would like to put on record my thanks for his services to the Club and wish him every success in the future.”

Clegg added: “I am bitterly disappointed that we have parted company with Paul, but we accept that this is in our respective best interests.

“Paul has worked tirelessly to try and deliver the levels of success on the pitch which we all aspire to but the recent results and our position in the table required us to make a change.

“The search for a new manager of this club is well underway and I am confident that we will find the right man to get the best out of the players, both individually and collectively, and lead the team to future success.

“The immediate focus is to ensure we secure three points on Saturday and in this regards I have asked Chris Hutchings to take over as caretaker manager.”

  • Didnt Robert Rosario used to play for the Canaries? Presume his support for PJ was because he wants to see Town relegated. Never mind Robert I'm sure ME & SC will oblige with a third useless manager. Jim had to go in 2009 as he was more interested in defending his job than building the team but they have had 3 12 years and two chances to get a better manager and failed. We have gone backwards and are in severe danger of becoming like Norwich 2005-9, change the manager for a worse one every 20 months until one gets you relegated. Oh for the days of the Sheepshanks Burley 5 year plan 95-2000 which worked to the day. ME has now had 5 yrs, 3 managers and 10 transfer windows but has only succeeded in wasting several million pounds of his own money in inadequate players and lost what he could have got back in fees by not renewing the contracts of the better players just to see us 18 league places below where he found us in 2007.

  • So sad to see Ipswich Town fans abuse PJ and the players after last nights game. This is not in the great tradition of this club. How on earth is a new manager going to lift the morale of these players? after that disgraceful exibition last night... We can forget Terry Butcher, Mick McCarthy, Mick Mills etc they will distance themselves after last nights debacle...It's been said before..Players Managers come and go. But the integrity of the club and supporters must be maintained..

  • Right decision naturally but given the track record of previous disastrous appointments, I'm not confident it will be any different this time around. They'll choose some old has-been as opposed to a young get up and go guy.

  • Happy to see the back of him. I don't really know any fan who was happy with the appointment in the first place. Just hope M.E does not look towards Steve Kean as the answer.

  • Such a shame. I wish you all the very best Paul Jewell. Perhaps the players will now stop the stupidity and act as professional sportsmen and play as we all know they can. COME ON YOU BLUES, lets get the big 3 points on saturday. The only way is up (hopefully).

  • It's a shame that he had to go really. He worked hard with the team and I don't like seeing anyone get the sack but he was backed by the owner substantially. The results were not good enough and the players we have on paper should be mid table as a minimum so it has come down to the tactics and confidence building. Now lets put it behind us and look forward to a new era and a team that can settle rather than changing every season. All I hope is that the moaners who didn't give Keane or Jewell a chance get behind the new version of ITFC.
