David Nugent: ‘I’ve scored so many goals against Ipswich – it’s a joke’

Leicester v Ipswich: LEICESTER City striker David Nugent is determined to shake off a neck injury so he can continue his incredible goalscoring run against Ipswich Town.

The one-time England international – who is the Foxes’ top-scorer with seven this season – has struck nine times in ten games against the Blues while playing for Preston North End, Portsmouth and Leicester.

He has only failed to score against Ipswich on three occasions. All three were during home games, including last season’s 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium, while he has even notched a goal at Portman Road for England Under-21s.

The pantomime villain responded to the boos by playfully cupping his ear to the fans when scoring his side’s winner at Portman Road back in April.

And having missed the first part of this week’s training with a neck injury, he told the Leicester Mercury: “I am hoping I will be fit but even if I am only 90% fit I will be playing. I don’t want to miss any games and I enjoy playing against Ipswich.

“I have a good record against them but mainly at Portman Road. I have scored so many there it is a joke.

“Every striker has a side that they always seem to score against and mine happens to be Ipswich.”

It is nothing personal on Nugent’s part. In fact he thinks Mick McCarthy’s men are a good side and has been surprised to see them struggling this season.

“I thought they were a decent side last year under Paul Jewell,” he said. “Even though we beat them at Portman Road they played well and could have got something from that game.

“They are a tough side and have some quality players. Richie Wellens has just come back from loan there and said what a good set of lads they are.

“Whenever a side gets a new manager they always seem to up their game so it will be a tough one on Saturday.”
