Ex-British Lions winger Tyrone Howe to referee at Suffolk school

17:49 15 October 2012

EX-British Lions and Ireland winger, Tyrone Howe, will be officiating a number of games at the forthcoming Old Buckenham Hall Sevens, which takes place on November 25.

The 41-year-old, who is now a coach at Uppingham School in Rutland, played 14 times for Ireland, scoring six tries, while playing the majority of his club rugby for Ulster.

Howe is also a regular during Sky Sports’ rugby coverage, working as a commentator and analyst.

The former Test player is one of three visiting referees, the others being his Uppingham School colleague, Toby Makhzangi and Ipswich YM chairman of junior rugby, Paul Rowland.

Director of sport, Nick Drake said: “Tyrone came to the event last year and he is a big supporter

of junior rugby.

“He referees the games and then passes on his knowledge to the young players afterwards. He makes a big impact on and off the pitch.

Matches begin at 11am, finishing around 3.30pm and will feature teams from Sudbury RFC, Ipswich YM, The Abbey (Woodbridge) and Ipswich Pre School, among others.

“The tournament is always of a good standard and we will have three club rugby teams taking part,” he said.

“We also have independent prep schools coming from as far away as Norfolk and we have two teams on the waiting list for next year. The tournament is certainly getting bigger

and bigger.”

There will also be representatives on the day there from Help For Heroes.
