IPSWICH Life Saving Club were in competition action in Warwick as they took part in the 2012 Warwick Challenge Cup.

With a team of six they were up against some of the Midlands’ toughest teams, in an exhausting eight discipline event.

Georgia Cousins, Olivia De’Ath, Vez Hack, Tom Linford-Wood, Sam Whitmore and Mark Oxford made up the Ipswich team, who enjoyed working as a team rather than pairs or individuals, and often up against each other.

These events tested life saving aquatic skills, swimming speed and stamina, as the action kept coming thick and fast with very little recovery time between events.

With two second place positions the team were pleased with an overall fifth place. It was also encouraging that the team was based on youth, with five of the six team members still in their teens.

With other club members Luke Schofield, Annabel Bale and Toby Whitmore also travelling as stand-by squad members, David Ebbs as nominated reserve, Nicola Humphrys as team manager with Marian Brown and some supporting parents, it made for a great atmosphere.

The team, with the addition of reserve, Ebbs, then contested the Warwick Water-Polo Cup.

After dispatching Stratford B in the qualifier by a single goal, the team were then awarded victory as Heanor withdrew, giving them a place in the final.

Up against a much older Stratford A team, they lost the final 2-0, throwing caution to the wind in the dying seconds to all push forward looking for an equaliser.
