NEWMARKET’S Goldie Sayers has been named in a provisional 109-strong team to compete for Great Britain at the forthcoming European Championships which begins next Wednesday, in Helsinki.

Sayers, 29, can seal her Olympic Games place by securing a top-two place at the ‘A’ standard distance at this Friday’s Olympic trials in Birmingham. If that is the case, Sayers is then likely to be rested from the tournament in the Finnish capital in order to prepare for London.

The 5,000 metres world champion Mo Farah could also compete. He will be selected to compete over 5,000m and 10,000m in London, but wants to contest the 1,500m at the trials in order to work on his finishing speed.

“Running the 1,500m at the Aviva 2012 Trials is a great chance for me to work on my speed and tactics in a championship format, over two days,” said Farah.

“At the Olympics I’ll need to recover as quickly as possible between races, so running two races back to back will be good preparation.”
