IPSWICH schoolgirl Hannah Martin will be aiming to win bronze for Great Britain’s U21 women at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival tomorrow night.

After two successive defeats to the hosts and China this week, Team GB face USA tonight (10pm kick-off) in their final four-nation group match, with third position the highest possible finish.

Following a 3-0 defeat to their Australian counterparts on the opening day of the tournament at the Hockey Centre, Sydney Olympic Park in 30 degrees heat, Britain needed a win over China yesterday to retain any gold medal ambitions.

And after the British side took the lead shortly before half time with a goal from Bristol Firebrands’ Lily Owsley, a top-two finish in the group looked possible.

However, GB were pegged back in the second half through Mengyu Wang’s penalty corner before, before Na Wang put the Chinese 2-1 up three minutes later.

GB were unable to restore parity, with Great Britain Head Coach Craig Keegan critical of their finishing.

She said: “As a team, we need to quickly learn that at this level if you don’t put away your chances when you are on top you give the opposition to get back into the match.

“In the extreme heat both teams slowed in the second half and our young British girls were unable to sustain their dominance with the heat taking its toll.

“That, and some poor decisions resulted in us conceding two unnecessary goals.”

Martin, in the final year of sixth-form at Ipswich School, is the younger sister of Ipswich Olympian, Harry, who played for GB at this summer’s Olympics.

The 17-year-old has featured in both Team GB clashes so far and will be hoping to bring home a bronze medal from Down Under tomorrow night, with the bronze medal playoff match scheduled to take place at 9pm British time.
