Winger Michael Kightly could be in line for a reunion with Mick McCarthy, at Ipswich Town, following confirmation of his release by Burnley this afternoon.

McCarthy plucked him from Essex non-league side Grays in 2005 and turned him into a Premier League player during their five years working together at Molineux, Kightly starring in the Championship winning season of 2009.

The direct running wideman went on to play for Stoke in the top-flight, then moved to Turf Moor where he played a key role in two more Championship promotions under Sean Dyche.

McCarthy revealed last month that he tried to sign Kightly last summer before turning to Leicester City loanee Tom Lawrence instead after a deal couldn’t be struck. The EADT and Ipswich Star understands that Kightly was keen to move to Portman Road at that time too.

Kightly ended up joining Burton Albion on loan for the second half of the season and played a key role in them avoiding Championship relegation.

Burnley boss Dyche said: Dyche said: “Kights has been a great servant of the club and always a tremendous person to have around the group.

“Both players (Joey Barton also released) have had a big effect on what we have done during their time at Turf Moor, and we wish them well, as we do all those leaving this summer.”
