Former Ipswich Town striker Darren Bent is battling to be fit to face his former club with Burton Albion on Saturday.

Bent, now 34, joined the Brewers on loan for the rest of the season in January, with his contract at parent club Derby due to expire in the summer.

Having not kicked a ball for the Rams this season after suffering a hamstring injury while taking a penalty in pre-season, Bent made his debut for Burton at home to Reading on January 30 but missed their defeat at Aston Villa after picking up a knock.

Speaking today, Burton boss Nigel Clough said the former Ipswich striker was training this week in a bid to be fit to return to the club he started his career with.

“Darren Bent is going to do a little bit of training this week, so we’ll see how he is,” Clough said.

The Brewers boss has a string of injury worries heading into this weekend’s game, with defender Tom Flanagan out for a month with a calf problem while Ben Turner is also a doubt. Luke Murphy has a cut to his shin while midfielder Martin Samuelsen missed the loss at Villa due to illness.

With Flanagan injured, Stephen Warnock loaned to Bradford and Ryan Delaney moving to Rochdale, Damien McCrory is Burton’s only recognised left back.
