Ipswich Town forward Martyn Waghorn is confident his goal drought will end sooner rather than later.

The 28-year-old made a flying start to life with the Blues following his £250k summer switch from Rangers, scoring 10 goals in his first 19 appearances.

Since netting in a 4-2 home win against Nottingham Forest back on December 2, the South Shields-born striker has gone 11 games without putting his name on the scoresheet – though he has rattled the woodwork at both Bolton and Sunderland recently.

• McCarthy bookies’ favourite for vacant Barnsley job

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s visit of rock-bottom Burton Albion, he said: “It’ll stop - and hopefully soon.

“It’ll come, I know it will. You just have to keep doing the right things and it doesn’t stay like that for too long.

“I’ve kind of, not changed position, but we’re trying to be a little bit more solid and a little bit more compact. I’ve come in from the wing and I’ve dropped a bit deeper. The main thing is I’m still assisting and contributing and doing well in games.

• Skuse signs new deal despite being unsure of McCarthy’s future

“Winning games and getting three points is the most important thing at the end of the day.

“It’s not about personal accolades. As a striker you want to chip in with the odd goal now and again, but I can’t complain. We won last weekend, we’re doing alright and we’re in a good position, which is the main thing.”

Asked if he had another computer game themed celebration planned, following previous nods to Call of Duty and Mario Kart, he joked: “The last time I was asked about this was just before the 11 games without a goal so I better not tempt fate! It will probably be something off the cuff born out of a bit of belief.”

• Carayol wants to get Blues fans off their seats

The Blues produced some patchy form at the turn of the year – there was just one win and four goals scored over eight games in all competitions – but registered a much-needed 2-0 victory at struggling Sunderland last weekend to remain eight points adrift of the play-off places.

Following the visit of Burton, Town face rivals Norwich City at Carrow Road (Sunday 18th) before hosting high-flying Cardiff (Tuesday 21st).

“In this league it’s about timing your little blip in form,” said Waghorn. “Hopefully we’ve had that and we can pick up a bit of momentum again and see where that takes us.”
