Ipswich Town are set to sign Jon Dadi Bodvarsson as a replacement striker for Brett Pitman.

The Blues will sign hard-working front man Bodvarsson on loan from Championship rivals Wolves with view to a permanent move, while Pitman is in talks with newly-promoted League One club Portsmouth.

Wolves paid German club Kaiserslautern around £1m for Bodvarsson’s signature last summer following his key role in Iceland’s successful Euro 2016 campaign, but has found himself surplus to requirements at Molineux as new Portuguese boss Nuno Espirito Santo continues to splash the cash.

The 25-year-old is 6ft 3in tall, but is far from an archetypal target man. He selflessly runs the channels from the first to the last minute, but scored only four goals last season. The caveat to that is he was often used as an impact substitute in a lone striker role and could benefit from playing alongside a fellow forward, with Mick McCarthy seemingly set on a 4-4-2 formation in 2017/18.

Pitman, 29, still has a year left on his deal at Portman Road, but it’s understood that McCarthy is willing to let one of the club’s higher earners go for nothing as he looks to really freshen up his squad following last season’s dire 16th-place finish.

The Jersey-born former AFC Bournemouth player was not keen on dropping down a division, but would be happy to move his family back to the south coast and will be impressed by the fact that the resurgent club, just promoted from League Two, have already sold more than 13,000 season tickets.

Pitman arrived at Town on a free transfer in June 2015, along with loan winger Ryan Fraser, as Tyrone Mings joined the Cherries in an £8.1m deal.

He finished his debut campaign as the Blues’ top-scorer, scoring 11 goals in 28 starts and 19 substitute appearances, but then netted just four times in a reduced 14 starts and nine sub displays during 2016/17.

Christophe Berra, Jonathan Douglas, Leon Best, Giles Coke and Paul Digby have all been released this summer, Kieffer Moore and Josh Emmanuel have joined Rotherham on loan, while Kevin Bru is transfer-listed.

Town have already signed striker Joe Garner (Rangers, £750k), midfielders Emyr Huws (Cardiff, £1m), Tom Adeyemi (Cardiff, free), winger Bersant Celina (Man City, loan) and defender Jordan Spence (free agent).
