League One side Blackburn Rovers are reportedly set to beat Championship duo Ipswich Town and Barnsley to the signing of striker Dominic Samuel from Reading.

Samuel spent the second half of last season on loan with the Blues but was restricted to just two starts and four substitute appearances after suffering an early toe injury.

The 23-year-old had made six league starts for Jaap Stam’s side in the first half of the season and many Royals fans were calling for him to get more game time, but it looks as though he will be departing his boyhood club this summer.

According to The Sun, Blackburn – managed by ex-Blues favourite Tony Mowbray and preparing for life in the third-tier following relegation – have out-bid Town and Barnsley with a £500k offer.

McCarthy needs to bolster his front line with Kieffer Moore having joined Rotherham on loan and Brett Pitman understood to be available for transfer. That leaves Joe Garner, David McGoldrick and Freddie Sears as options.

Asked on Saturday, following a 5-0 friendly win at Irish side Drogheda, whether Samuel would be returning to Portman Road, McCarthy said: “At this moment in time, nothing’s happening with that.”

Playing wide right in a fluid front four suits David McGoldrick, says Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy.

Rotherham manager Paul Warne is expecting a January bidding war for Ipswich loanee Kieffer Moore.

Mick McCarthy and Callum Connolly have both lavished praise on Blues midfielder Cole Skuse, with the Ipswich Town boss insisting the consistent performer is ‘as good as anybody’.

Danny Rowe still has a future at Ipswich Town, but is free to leave the club on loan in a bid to force his way into Mick McCarthy’s team.

Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy has told lead striker Joe Garner not to worry about his mini goal drought and implored him never to lose his fiery edge.

Emyr Huws and Teddy Bishop could both play a part for Ipswich Town against Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow night, manager Mick McCarthy has confirmed.

Ipswich Town host Sheffield Wednesday in a televised Championship clash (Sky Sports) tomorrow night.

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal has called for the club’s supporters to get behind his players ahead of tomorrow night’s televised Championship match at Ipswich Town.

Episode One: Stuart Watson and Andy Warren discuss Ipswich Town’s draw at Hull City, hear from Mick McCarthy and Jordan Spence and make the first pitches for football’s Room 101.

Jordan Spence has been telling his Ipswich Town team-mates just how much of a threat he is in front of goal - and the defender is delighted to be proving his point on the field.
