In this week’s nostalgia, we remember when goals from Richard Naylor, David Johnson and James Scowcroft saw off Nottingham Forest on the opening day of the 1999-2000 season in August 1999.
Goals by Richard Naylor, David Johnson and James Scowcroft saw the Blues begin their 1999-2000 campaign with a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest at Portman Road in August 1999.
Ipswich made it 1-0 in the 18th minute when Naylor headed home from a Mark Venus free-kick to give Town the lead.
Two minutes later Naylor turned provider, as his cushioned header allowed Johnson to unleash a left-foot thunderbolt to give Town a 2-0 goal lead with just 20 minutes on the clock.
The third goal came in the 71st minute after a one-touch interchange between Scowcroft and Johnson ended with the former finishing decisively to ensure a flying start to the year.
Forest got on the scoresheet when Manuel Thetis brought down Marlon Harewood and Chris Bart-Williams converted the penalty, but it was scant consolation and did nothing to dent Ipswich’s statement of intent.
