Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy is hopeful of signing a striker before tomorrow’s Championship opener against Birmingham City, at Portman Road, but says it’s not reported target Harry Bunn.

The Blues boss has just three senior strikers at his disposal in the form of Joe Garner, Freddie Sears and David McGoldrick following the departures of Brett Pitman, Kieffer Moore and Leon Best.

And having seen division rivals beat him to the additions of Marley Watkins (Barnsley to Norwich), Danny Ward (Rotherham to Cardiff) and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson (Wolves to Reading) this summer, he is not wanting to tempt fate on this current deal in the pipeline.

Asked if there would be a new striker in the squad in time for tomorrow’s big kick-off, he replied: “Hopefully. I think we’re progressing. Fingers crossed. I’m not going to make too much of it, but we’re hoping to get somebody in.

“Listen, we’ve been spinning plates all summer and lots of them have fallen on my head. I’m hoping this one doesn’t.”

There have been reports this week that Town have made a £600k bid for Huddersfield Town front man Bunn. Quizzed on that link, McCarthy said: “People know we’re needing a striker and I’ve had hundreds put into me. I’ve watched them all on our systems. I dropped asleep one afternoon I was watching so many of them!

“Harry Bunn was one of them. He is available. I like Harry Bunn – but it’s not him.

“I’ll let (owner) Marcus (Evans) deal with that. I’ve pointed out what player I would like and hopefully we’ll get him.”

Mccarthy made public his interest in striker Jordan Hugill last season, but says the Preston player is out of Town’s price range.

“I think you’ll find he is way beyond us,” he said. “I believe Birmingham were looking at him and I’m told they are being quoted six million quid. This is hearsay. I haven’t spoken to (Birmingham manager) Harry (Redknapp) or anybody at Preston. I speak to a lot of agents though, a lot of people in the game, and there are few interested in him – I’m not surprised. Good luck to him if he moves.”
