Ipswich Town striker David McGoldrick has departed the Republic of Ireland squad prematurely, but has not picked up a fresh injury.

The 29-year-old was substituted in the second half of the Blues’ 3-1 home defeat to Bristol City with a tight hamstring, but still joined up with the Ireland squad for their crunch World Cup qualifiers and was given the green light to train following a scan.

He was left out of the matchday squad entirely as Ireland recorded a vital 2-0 home win over Moldova last Friday night, ex-Town man Daryl Murphy netting both goals, and has been released from international duty ahead of tonight’s crucial match with Wales in Cardiff.

James McCarthy (Everton) and Jonny Hayes (Celtic) have also been allowed to return to their clubs.
