IPSWICH Town striker Michael Chopra appears to have deleted his account on social networking site Twitter after posting this picture of a bag stuffed with money.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The accompanying message to the photograph read: ‘Keep tweeting me about being in debt haha love it #cash #skint #lol #lendmeafiver.’

Blues team mate Jay Emmanuel-Thomas – who last week posted a picture of a bible that someone had sent to Chopra – then wrote: ‘Michael Chopra Your A Clown’.

Chopra, 29, revealed the extent of a gambling addiction in November 2011, speaking publicly about how he had been spending up to £20,000-a-day and lost as much as £2m.

It emerged the following month, that Ipswich Town had loaned Chopra a £250,000 to pay off debts that he owed.

The player spent three weeks in the Sporting Chance Clinic in an attempt to beat the addiction last season and, having spoken about how well he had been doing, returned from a specialist training camp in California last summer with the promise of a 20-goal season for the Blues.

The 29-year-old has made just 11 starts this season though, scoring three goals, and at the end of last week was found to have been part of a conspiracy involving corruption and betting exchanges by a British Horse Authority disciplinary panel – the charges relating to incidents that occurred during his time as a Cardiff player.

Recently, Chopra’s ex-wife pleaded exceptional hardship against a speeding ban – saying she wouldn’t be able to send her son to school in a taxi.

Heather Swan made the revelations when she appeared at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court, claiming that Chopra was on the verge of bankruptcy.

Last month, Chopra released a statement saying that he would not be defending himself against the BHA charges as he could not afford to cover the legal costs.

Chopra’s Twitter account – @MichaelChopra10 – had almost 15,000 followers. Earlier today he had also posted a picture of himself playing for Newcastle United in the Champions League earlier in his career.

  • My heart rose then sank in a split second. When I first glimpsed the headline, I read Chopra leaves ..... then to my dismay it followed with the word Twitter and not Town. Oh well ..... we live in hope! He has been given loads of financial help from this club and given back little in the way of goals or good performances, mocking Ipswich Town supporters into the bargain. It will be good for the club when he has gone.

  • Why indeed are we bothering with him? I couldn’t care less about how little or much money he has. All I see is that he is yet another waste of space earning fortunes at our expense, whilst we the fans pay some of the highest prices in the country to watch some of the very poorest football in the land. A perfect example of the legacy of the shameful Clegg years that have set this club back so much. I don’t care if Chopra can go somewhere else for more, or find a more tolerant employer or even score a hatful of goals elsewhere. I just wish he went.

  • It should first be said that there is no way of knowing whether the photograph is genuine and whether the cash is Chopras. If it is then I am sure there will be many people, organisations and authorities that will want to know more. If it is not genuine the picture still remains strangely symbolic of modern football and footballers in general (irrespective of club). To me it demonstrates the utter contempt those lucky enough to play the game have for the supporters and hard working parents who have to give up many things in order to pay for match tickets and buy club merchandise to subsidise the greed, wastefulness and moronic behaviour of their "heroes". If it does nothing else it shows what a creton the man is and although I am glad to see the back of Clegg he must also be glad to no longer have to deal with such odious creatures.

The Club should cut it's losses with Chopra - someone will buy him because he scores goals (if only occasionally!).

Alas this particular form of networking seems to attract idiots and spoils it for those sensible users. However the biggest fool remains to be Chopra himself, I mean, what sort of a supposedly grown up bloke would react to such a form of child play in the first place?

  • Yes i may be long in the tooth(62) and not completely up to date or interested in Twitter or Facebook, but believe these to forums whilst ingenious also dangerous because people put comments or their daily, weekly or monthly goings on. Stating stupid things such as I'm now going to the toilet or putting something in the microwave. Who cares? .Well, obviously some do otherwise such drivel wouldn't be put on these sites. They are also dangerous as details such as "I'm on holiday in March" can lead to the unscrupulous finding out where they live and ransacking the place. Also spur of the moment comments can get up peoples noses, regardless of the provocation. I feel it is a shame that people like Michael Chopra become addicted to gambling, it is so easy to do and with so much time on their hands it is probably hard to find something to do all the time apart from drinking and gambling. It is obviously not the need for money, but the thrill of winning, which unfortunately doesn't always happen. You don't see many bookies on a bike !!

They could, however, been reigned in by a CEO who new something about football. That ultimately is the responsibility of the owner who employed SC.

  • To be honest, if he was even half decent as a player most of us would just smile at this. Because Chopra has proven to be a general flop on the pitch it is no wonder that we question other areas of his life. I don't buy this guff about Chopra being a natural goalscorer. Look at his record, he has only ever scored more than 20 goals total in a season twice. Twice in 11 full seasons. Add in the fact he has scored 1 goal in 2.6 games through his career, and all we have is an average goalscorer at the Champ standard. Yeah, he liked to make a play on the fact that he is better than fans through his Twitter-feed, but this just amplified his poor general attitude and he will end up being out of work in the next few years... then what? I suspect bankruptcy if he doesn't sort out his head.. The only reason he earns so much is because average players are over paid, not because he is actually worth the cash. His contract runs out in June 2014. If we could sell him for ANY money in the summer it would be sweet relief for him to be gone. Bad rubbish best forgotten.

  • What a dreadful waste of what was once a talented player. The promised 20 goals a season have never materialised and he seems to live out his life via social networking in the way one might expect a 15 year old to do. I would pay up his contract and let him go. He has had plenty of chances but I fear that while he remains, all the publicity he attracts will be bad.
