SIMON Clegg has faced the media just hours after it was announced that Paul Jewell was leaving Portman Road.

The key points from Ipswich Town’s chief executive:

– Derby defeat was owner Marcus Evans’ “tipping point” after he wanted to give Jewell two home games this week

– We have to “shoulder the responsibility” of Roy Keane and Paul Jewell appointments

– Process under way of finding new man. Have 34 names on the list already, both compiled by owner/Clegg and after receiving calls from interested parties. Phone has been “red-hot” since lunch-time, says Clegg

– Won’t comment on any names, Chris Hutchings in charge on Saturday and “beyond if necessary”

– Evans has a “small inner circle” advising him on the new appointment

– Won’t comment on whether club looking for experienced head or younger coach

– Compensation not an issue if number one choice was already at another club

– Won’t speak to club legends like Mick Mills and Matt Holland when it comes to finding the right man

– Want a long-term appointment, rather than one till the end of the season

– Clegg on Jewell: “There is a personal issue here to do with Paul Jewell. Paul is very passionate about the club, I can’t speak highly enough of him. Paul put his heart and soul into club and has not succeeded in way he wanted to. It is very painful for him – he is supported by a very strong family.”

  • Mills as Football Director, yes. Mills as manager no. Clegg stated that he did not think that Director of Football works, so no chance of that happening.

  • During his Press presentation Mr Clegg seemed extremely nervous, so much so that he referred to our next match on Tuesday !!!!!! I did ask Dave Gooderham to request our CEO to comment why and how our debt has more than doubled on 'his watch' if the club is in good financial condition. As usual our EADT scribes 'chickened' out

  • Tim, we owe £70M with gate receipts of £6M a year, not taking into account costs! I would call that a financial mess

  • Peter Wright is correct. Why not Mick Mills. He has shown the passon for the club. Just give him the time to do it. Even if he has to bring in new blood. Seems some of the old is starting to get out of date with the way they play. I am from the time of the 70's and 80's teams. They show more heart than some of theses players.

  • The only constant for the past four and a half years if Simon Clegg, PJ is gone and clegg is still there and in this interview said he had not considered his position. What arogance. The new manager must not be handicaped by the control of this man.

  • Won’t speak to club legends like Mick Mills and Matt Holland when it comes to finding the right man WHY NOT for gods sake! you seem to have got it wrong so far with your lack of football knohow when appointing a manager, Mick Mills would make an excellent Ipswich manager

  • Hopefully Messrs. Clegg and Evans will make the right appointment third time around but even a manager with a brilliant track record won't achieve success if he doesn't receive proper backing. The club seems to always be looking for bargans in the transfer market and this has failed badly. I was bitterly disappointed with the effort put in by most of the players last night. Sadly I also feel that Simon Clegg is as culpable as Jewell and Keane but I can't see Marcus Evans replacing him. In his interview with radio Suffolk today, Mr Glegg denied that the club was in a mess. Financially may be not but in other respects I think there is no doubt and the fact that the CE is in denial of this is a real concern.

  • It is a real shame Clegg is still at Portman Road to make these points. In my humble opinion he should have been shown the door at the same time as Jewell. I realise that would never happen but am afraid until he does go anyone that comes in will be fighting against the odds.

  • One man and one man alone is responsible for the last 21 months at ITFC. Jewell. HE brought to the club dozens of players. None were chosen by anyone else but him. That number should have enabled any manager worth his salt to get a decent run out of 11 to 20 of them. At no time did Jewell seem to know what he was doing. No set team no cohesive tactics. no rhythem, home or away. Yes he wanted other players, EVERY manager craves for the best very few get them. Lambert and Adkins did wonders with nobodies. Its called good management. Jewell kept telling us he was a good manager. Wise up everyone he was clueless and should have gone a year ago, after the Peterborough result away. All the clues were there and many of us on here said just that. FRANK and Percy your blind faith in him was laudable but laughable.

  • As I said during the webchat feed of this Clegg conference, it is like the football version of Spinal Tap. If it is a results based industry, and Keane and Jewell have had to pay the price for that (in Clegg's words) surely the man who appointed them both (Clegg) should also leave?
