THE writing was on the wall for Paul Jewell as manager of Ipswich Town after last night’s 2-1 home defeat to Derby County made it 11 games without a win and sent the Blues to the bottom of the Championship.

That is the verdict of Motherwell boss Stuart McCall who played under Jewell and his assistant Chris Hutchings at Bradford.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, McCall said: “You could see he was hurting at the weekend (when Town lost to Hull 2-1) – he is a proud man.

“I was delighted when I saw Ipswich had gone ahead against Derby but then to be pegged back like that was cruel. The writing was probably on the wall as we are all in a results-driven business.

“Paul will be hurting. I know him and Chris would have worked tirelessly but sometimes it doesn’t work and you have to move on.”

  • If Jewell was so good, why are we so poor? Maybe the gutted player can answer that?

  • I don't pretend to know much about football, but surely it should be the players on the pitch who should be sacked? They're clearly not good enough.

  • Stop defending Jewell. He was a complete waste of air the whole time he was here. No? Did he bring any sense of direction to the club? Did he bring in any good players ? Did he develop any good young players ? Did he play attractive football ? Did he show savvy tactics ? Did he find a player to play out of his skin consistantly? Did he increase the crowds ? Did he inspire the fans from one week to the next ? Did he show consistant plans for the team to go forward ? If anyone can truthfully say yes to any of these questions I would be surprised. Anyone can work hard, but if you are unskilled it is fruitless. All perspiration no inspiration, that about sums up his time at Ipswich.
