BRAINTREE Town midfielder, Kenny Davis, is eying-up a mid-table slot if the Iron can claim a crunch win at bottom-four club Nuneaton Town this afternoon.

Davis is looking forward to another outing with the England C team, against Turkey next month, but before then he would like his Iron team to be well clear of the Blue Square Premier drop zone.

Alan Devonshire’s men have won three of their last six matches, to lift themselves three points clear of the bottom four.

And they have a golden opportunity to open up a bigger gap, in the first of a double-header against Nuneaton – the two clubs will meet again in another league match in March.

“I wouldn’t say this weekend is a must-win, but it would be a massive bonus to take the three points,” insisted Davis.

“It would create a buffer between us and the clubs at the bottom, and it would do wonders for our confidence.

“The Nuneaton game is a similar one to our recent match against Telford. It’s the same sort of situation, and we managed to win that one (3-2).

“I believe we are starting to pick up our form at the right time. We have some tricky away games coming up, but we have been doing well on the road.

“It’s at home where we have got to keep improving, to encourage a few more people through the turnstiles,” added Davis.

Midfield general Davis was recently named in the England C squad, to face Turkey in the semi-finals of the International Challenge Trophy at Dartford’s Princes Park on Tuesday, February 5.

It will be a chance for the 24-year-old to be reunited with former Braintree left-back Aswad Thomas, who left the Iron to join Grimsby Town last summer. The Mariners are currently top of the Blue Square Premier, and Thomas is their representative in the England C squad.

“It will be a real honour to play for England C again,” confirmed Davis.

“The fact that it is taking place at Dartford means it is not far from where I come from, so there will be a lot of my family and friends able to come and watch me.

“It will be my fourth appearance for England, and it’s something to look forward to, although before then I want to help earn a few more points for Braintree.”

The Iron could hand a debut to new signing Dan Walker, following the attacker’s loan move from Luton Town nine days ago.

Today’s hosts Nuneaton are third-from-bottom, although they registered an impressive 3-1 away win at Cambridge United in their last outing, on January 15.

Nuneaton players showed their commitment to the cause this week, to make sure that today’s game went ahead, by clearing the pitch of snow rather than training on Tuesday night.

Braintree have not played for a fortnight, since the home win over Telford, due to postponements against Grimsby and Dartford.
