Northstander: Let’s face it, our season is over – so let’s build for a future without Mick McCarthy

What a shame. Mick McCarthy was only seconds away from having another favourite DVD to add to his collection of perfect away performances. You know the ones – shut up shop for the entire second half, then nick a winner from a set-piece, writes Northstander Terry Hunt,

McCarthy himself would have had a starring role in this one, with his ‘interesting’ celebration after our goal.

Those expletives certainly didn’t come straight from charm school - but McCarthy has denied suggestions they were aimed at Town supporters.

When we scored, it seemed as though McCarthy’s team selection would be justified. When I heard the line-up, it sounded like an utterly predictable “every point’s a prisoner” approach from the manager.

But when Chambers’ header hit the back of the net, I was prepared to forgive him. Sadly, though, we managed to gift-wrap a heartbreaking goal for Norwich.

It was a catalogue of mistakes, from the moment Knudsen put in an awful cross instead of going for the corner. After that, it was a comedy of errors, and only those wearing yellow and green were laughing.

So, inevitably, now we have the inquests. Why no Celina at any point? Why bring on McGoldrick instead? It was never going to be his kind of game. Celina’s pace and trickery would at least have given us the chance to catch them on the break. It’s yet another unfathomable McCarthy decision.

All of which brings us to the inevitable conclusion that our season is over. Let’s be honest, the play-offs are out of reach. We’re just not good enough. Which should mean it’s time to play the kids to get them ready for next season.

Let’s get Flynn Downes back from Luton, and give him the opportunity to experience Championship football. What’s the point in playing a loanee like Connolly instead?

I do think we have a platform to build on, when our injured players come back next season. But Mick McCarthy should not be given the chance to develop the squad. At the end of the season, Marcus Evans should shake his hand, and say farewell.

It’s what the vast majority of fans want - and surely that matters, doesn’t it?
