In atrocious conditions along the wet and, in parts, muddy rural course to the south of the town he made the best of things to come home in a creditable time of 1hr 11mins 50 secs in the 20k event.

The Norwich Road Runner was delighted with his performance, having finished third in the same Bungay Black Dog Running Club event last year.

Gibbs always had the edge on Paul Holley, of Newmarket Joggers, who was 82 seconds behind him in second, with Alan Cooney of Saxons Running Club from Saxmundham third in 1-14:26.

Graham Jenvey was the first Black Dog runner home in very creditable time of 1-17:47.

It was a good day for Norwich athletes, with Wayne Lincoln, of City of Norwich Athletics Club, winning the 10k race.

He also led from the start, coming home in 34 mins 31secs, comfortably ahead of second placed Paul Whall, of Lowestoft Road Runners, who clocked 35:42, with Bungay Black Dog’s promising youth athlete Keiran McMorran not far behind in third place in 36:01.

In the ladies 20k, Stowamarket Striders Tamara Jordan retained the title she won last year, dominating the race again to finish in 1-20:03, more than eight minutes ahead of second placed Marianne Williamson (unattached), who clocked 1-28:12. Third was Sabina Spence, of City of Norwich, in 1-31:12.

First Bungay Black Dog lady home was Joanne Cox in 1-34:12.

Last year Tamara’s twin sister, Rebecca, made it a unique family double by winning the 10k, but the pair could not quite repeat the feat this time, as Rebecca had to settle for third place in a still creditable time of 43:40.

The ladies 10k was won by Rachel Cave, of Team Balancise AC in 40:13, two minutes ahead of second placed Sandy Roberts (unattached) in 42:14. First Bungay Black Dog lady home was Jo Walker in 50:38.

There were again 500 entries in all for the Adnams Brewery sponsored race, and officials were pleased with how the race went despite the wintry conditions.
